ESRI UC 2021 Day 3

The first class I attended was "ArcGIS StoryMaps: What's New and What's Coming." The presenter started by talking about how to create your own themes. They also showed that new this year:

  • there will be over 1000 fonts (increasing from 80)
  • image editing - for example, making your photos black and white within the StoryMap
  • mapping enhancements
    • highlight maps - super cool!
    • map tour arrows

The next class was "UC Central Live: StoryMaps. StoryMaps are story telling through the use of maps. There are over 1.7 million StoryMaps. One-third of these have been authored by students/educators. Which came first, the story or the map? What story are you trying to tell? Who is the primary audience? Who is the secondary audience? Multimedia package. Provide where and why. StoryMaps engage the entire brain - text, pictures, maps, audio, and video. They ended by urging us to tell our stories.

The next class was "ArcGIS Online: Tips and Tricks for Viral Maps. The only exciting this from this class was that in the future we will be able to filter by map extent.

And then....my most favorite class - ArcGIS: Map Wizardry! I look forward to this class every year and look forward to geeking out. These guys blow my mind with their extreme talent. Kenneth spent a lot of time going over Wisely's walks (his dog). He attached a gps unit to his dog to track his walks, and then made a boat load of interesting maps with cartography tricks that were outstanding. He use Camtasia to record his presentation. John Nelson dug deep into more cartography tricks: holding control and drag a layer in pro, to create a copy of the layer. esrurl.com/nelsonstyles to download and use his custom symbologies. Coxcombs are weird. Fontjoy.com to find new neat fonts. ArcGIS online has a youtube channel with lots of helpful videos. Extent rectangles only work in 2D. Here is what they talked about last year.

I watched "UC Central Live: Developing GIS Organizations" and it was blah.

Next was "ArcGIS Pro Tips and Tricks." They showed options of how to customize the ribbon, and creating new custom tabs. You can now drag and drop things into Pro. Watching this class made me realize that I never use (or have a need for) bookmarks. They showed the "update data source tool," however I think it is more cumbersome and takes more time to use. Blending modes in Pro was a hot topic buzz word mentioned in almost every class, including this one. I need to spend some time on this one. They also went over scale-based symbology and that you can save AGOL webmap changes now in Pro.
