ESRI UC 2021 Day 1

This years theme is "GIS Creating a Sustainable Future."

I am totally bummed this year is yet again virtual, but covid...

Jack kicked things off with the Plenary, and hasn't aged a day.  There was a demo in Pro showing aerial imagery blending to reduce shadows, that was super sweet. There is an overlay mode to combine overlapping layers. There is now the ability to change how selections are symbolized, including making them hatched. They have added a command search bar at the top. There is a "change detection wizard" tool that looks super cool. And they finally have an eye dropper tool for colors! They also demo'd data engineering, which looks pretty sweet and helpful. Lots of charts and data digging in this one. 

Blending will be available in web map/map viewer. I love that you don't lose topo or color by using this tool. A few new things that are coming:

  • "instant apps"
  • dashboards now support arcade
  • enterprise on kubernetes 
    • cloud based
    • grafana dashboard - must look this up
  • "mapping mars for rovers"!!!
    • this was ridiculously cool!
  • geoplanner
    • geodesign for landscapes
Jack mentioned that there are thousands of ESRI dev employees. This blew my mind a little bit.  No wonder the technology is ever changing and expanding.

Jack's parting words were to "build great maps" and to "build maps that tell stories."  Yessir!

What Inspires Me

I saw a questions posed on Quora that asked what inspires a GIS Enthusiast? The answer to this will be different for each person.  For me, it is the following. My first GIS job, I spent a lot of time working on preplanning apartment complexes and mobile home parks with the fire department.  This meant that every time a specific crew was working, I would be on a ridealong with them, driving around each complex, marking things down on a map.  We started simple, with addresses and fire hydrants. You see, there isn't an universal addressing standard for apartment complexes or mobile home parks.  Each apartment can have a letter, number, building number, building letter, address, and/or any combination of these.  At the time, the 911 software they were using could get them to the gate, but no further.  This meant precious minutes driving around until they found it.  Mobile home parks start out with the homes in numerical order, but as homes move away, the next one in takes the nex

Developers Summit 2018, Day 1

I only saw one other GIS person on my flight out.  My flight was short and happier the further I got away from the snow.   The biggest news by far, is that Map Girl has been upgraded to Map Woman. They must have had a lot of complaints. When I walked into the Plenary Session, I wasn't quite sure where to sit to see the screen... They said this is the largest conference by far with over 2100 attendees.  The theme is "By developers, for developers." Monday they had a "spatial hackathon," and although I don't know what that means, I'm pretty sure my boss would win it. A little bit of time was spent talking about AR/VR, and a colleague from the state later said it reminded him of our demo at UVU for GIS day and that we "are on the leading edge of it."  High fives all around.  The only thing ESRI did that we haven't yet, is they added a viewshed in their cityscape AR app. Apparently it pays to get there early, becau

ESRI UC 2020 Day 1

What a year! Because of Covid/the Corona Virus/The Rona, the UC this year unfortunately was virtual.  I was super sad about this.  The UC is a fantastic reminder that I have a seriously cool job.  Being able to attend the UC in person, you are overwhelmed with people from around the world that also do GIS, which is a stark contrast to doing GIS in Utah and being one of very few. That being said, ESRI did a FANTASTIC job with the UC! Being virtual, I had ZERO issues with connecting to classes, listening to speakers, I never lost a connection or was kicked out or had lagging issues, and that is a huge feat! So, great job! Because it was virtual, there were only a handful of class offerings each  hour, and all from ESRI staff.  They also split the plenary sessions into one hour segments each day, instead of all day Monday.  I think that was a great idea. So Monday started with the Plenary.  There were over 80,000 people attending virtually! From around the world.  Can we take a moment
